Get rid of those holiday pounds! But in a fun way…

What a wonderful holiday it was! But now that you’re back, you naturally want to lose the holiday kilos that you have gained. What’s the best way to do that, without having to lose weight endlessly after your vacation? I would like to tell you how I do that and who knows, maybe my tips will help you.

Note: Hi, my name is Muriel and I enjoyed writing this article. Because I am Dutch, my English may not be optimal, but I do my best. Sorry for that. But I hope this blog article still inspires and informs you.

These 7 tips give you guidance on how to lose weight after your holiday

Below you can read my 7 tips on how to motivate myself to lose weight after a holiday. Read through the tips and get started!

#1. Accept that you gained extra weight during your vacation

It makes no sense to be very fed up with the kilos that you have gained after your holiday. After all, you really enjoyed all the delicious food and drinks during the holiday, didn’t you? Just hold on to that feeling and enjoy!

In the meantime, you just make plans to lose the extra pounds in the coming weeks with weight loss. So use the holiday energy you gained to get started with weight loss!

What helps me is that right after my vacation I determine how much I want to lose weight and then set a realistic goal for myself for a few weeks. For example: if I have gained 2 kilos during the holiday, then I want to lose the 2 kilos in 4 weeks, so I set the goal that I want to lose half a kilo per week.

#2. List what is healthy to eat

As a real gourmet, I can quickly be tempted during a holiday to eat the tastiest breakfasts, lunches, dinners, desserts, snacks and drinks. Of course, I also regularly eat healthy meals during a holiday, such as a salad or a tasty smoothie. And with a lactose intolerance I have to watch what I eat anyway, but usually I gain weight during a holiday.

What helps me to lose the holiday kilos is by simply listing what is healthy to eat after vacation. And, let’s face it, I actually know that and you might too: avoid unhealthy fats and unhealthy carbohydrates, consume as few bad sugars as possible and eat and drink as many healthy ingredients as possible.

Maybe you already have a list of healthy products for yourself? Just bring it back. If not, it’s an idea to compile a list. For example, you only have to type in the words ‘list of healthy foods’ in Google and you will see dozens of websites that can help you with it.

I also like to search the internet for healthy recipes. Pinterest is my favorite, but I also get a lot of inspiration from Google. For example, type in Google or Pinterest: ‘recipe low-carb dinner’ or ‘healthy lunch’ and you will get hundreds of recipes!

#3. Does a weight loss program help you, then do it!

Do you find it difficult to keep control of weight loss after your holiday? Then make it easy on yourself and follow a weight loss program. Or opt for a low-carbohydrate diet or keto diet, for example.

#4. Pick up sports and exercise again

Maybe it didn’t happen during the holidays to do a lot of sports and exercise? Then pick it up again after your vacation! Even if you have been active on holiday, but you have gained a few kilos, still exercise extra after your holiday. Walking, cycling, running, working out at the gym, yoga, anything is fine as long as you move and burn calories. I’m a fan of running myself, so when I come back from a vacation, I plan for example running at least 3 times a week for at least 5 km per run.

#5. Consider fasting more often

Since the beginning of 2021 I have started intermittent fasting, also known as intermittent fasting. It’s about when you eat, not what you eat. There are different variants and the one I often use is not eating for 16 hours (fasting) and eating something for 8 hours. I do this about 3 to 4 days a week and I really like it. Besides the fact that you can lose weight with it, it also offers many health benefits! Want to know more about intermittent fasting? There are plenty of books about it or search the internet for articles.

#6. Don’t forget the power of drinking water

Actually, this is an open door: after your holiday, start drinking a lot of water again instead of other drinks that you drank during the holiday, such as soft drinks, fruit juices, energy drinks and alcohol. You can vary quite well with water. Make tasty tea, such as herbal tea. Or, in a pitcher of cold water, add sprigs of mint, a few thin slices of fresh ginger, lime wedges and orange slices. A nice refreshing drink and healthy too.

#7. Don’t make it too hard for you, losing weight should remain fun! (especially after your vacation 😊)

Yes really, don’t make losing weight after your vacation too hard for you. Losing weight should remain fun and it would be a shame if you drop out after a week or two, because your ambitions for losing weight were too big. I usually try to lose weight in steps, such as half a kilo a week and that for a number of weeks. Or sometimes I want it faster and try to lose 1 kilo per week. That is already much more ambitious and for this I am not too strict on myself if I don’t make it for a week to lose 1 kilo. Make losing weight fun and make it as fun as being on vacation! Hopefully, these tips on how to lose weight after a holiday will help you. Good luck!
